How often should your dryer vent be cleaned??? Good question and one we are often asked.

Start by answering a few question about the normal usage of the dryer..

how many loads of clothes do you dry each week
if over 5 add 5 points,, If under 5 loads add 2 points
how long is the dryer vent from inside wall to hood on outside, best guess.
if over 15 feet add 5 points, if under 10 feet add 2 point
If you use dryer sheet softeners in each load (wash lint filter in hot soapy water to remove residue at least quarterly) add 5 points
if you use liquid softener in each load: add 1 point
if the house is over 5 yrs old and you do not know or can not remember when the dryer vent was cleaned last: add 5 points

If at any time you come up with 10 or more points you need to have the dryer vent cleaned. Especially if longer than 5 yrs.

Repairs to Dryer vents.. we can sometime repair or replace faulty dryer vent systems. If you have the old white plastic/vinyl product you have a potentially hazardous system.. Dryer manufactories have determined along with NC State Building Codes the old plastic type system pose a fire danger..

That product will catch fire or can get brittle with age and allow lint to be blown in between the floor and ceiling level. They are not capable of containing a fire if you were to have a overheat problem.. Tthe ridged pipe and silver flexable products are a better solution. The silver flexable product is UL listed for use on dryer vents and both are accpetable under NC State Building Codes,. We can check your system and advise a plan of action if you have the old white type product.
